The FDIC has begun what it describes as a “comprehensive review” of brokered deposits to evaluate current definitions, regulatory sanctions, and perhaps most importantly the extent to which these funds continue to pose the acute risks that led Congress in the 1980s S&L crisis and again in the 1990s banking crisis to sanction brokered deposits at insured depository institutions (IDIs) falling below the well-capitalized threshold.
