The Senate Judiciary Committee convened a session today to address discriminatory lending and foreclosure practices, with DOJ taken to task for reaching an “inadequate” settlement with Countrywide and for failing to criminally prosecute any abusive lenders. Chairman Leahy (D-VT) used the hearing as an opportunity to promote several pieces of housing-reform legislation sponsored by committee members, including Sen. Whitehouse’s (D-RI) bill, S. 486, to provide military servicemembers with greater foreclosure protections, and Sen. Franken’s (D-MN) bill, S. 2072, to streamline the refinancing process for homeowners.
