Today, the Senate Banking Committee held a hearing on government guarantees in the housing finance market, with Chairman Johnson both noting the need for housing finance reform and voicing concern about unintended consequences. The pro/con guarantee issue was batted back and forth by senators and witnesses to little conclusion, although Bob Corker shook things up with talk of a proposal for a new approach to the GSE/FHA high cost area loan limits.
